"The renovating of The Manenberg House will contribute to the bigger picture of Fusion’s daily intervention on the ground in Manenberg. Along with a daily program offering counselling, addiction step work, support groups and one on one mentoring, Fusion is opening a bakery in order to offer employment to ex-addicts and gangsters" Pete & Sarah Portal
The design for House Portal / Cru62 in Sherwood Park, Manenberg, explores the interaction between a space for youth wanting to make a change from a destructive lifestyle and a space for house parents. The project required the extensive repair of the house and re-organisation of the spaces to include shared communal spaces and private spaces for individuals. The house forms part of Fusion Manenberg’s goal in pursuing a transformational community where youth are offered a supportive space to re-discover or understand their identity, learn to deal with destructive behaviours and participate in a healthy, functional family. The construction phase of the project empowered 2 members of Fusion Manenberg youth to be part of the building process under the guidance of Anthony Van Rede of ArtiSan 5 Construction CC.
The focus of this project was to create a variety of communal spaces. Each side of the house expresses its individuality with the use of bold colours and a distinct material palette. The landscaping includes 101 square metres of space split between an indigenous garden and vegetable garden space for each individual in the house.
